The US Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday recommended that people with severe heartburn and acid reflux, which are conditions that occur as a result of excessive stomach acid, should be given a prescription for Nexium (esomeprazole), the new heartburn medication.
According to a published inThe New England Journal of Medicine, the recommended dosage of Nexium is 40 mg per day. The drug's manufacturer, Merck & Co., is offering the drug for free to those with severe heartburn or acid reflux. That's because the drug is available without a prescription.
"Patients should be on the lowest dose of the drug, and should not use a lower dose of this medication," the FDA said in a press release.
The drug is approved for those with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or persistent heartburn or acid reflux. The drug is also approved to treat heartburn that occurs as a result of excessive stomach acid.
Nexium and Nexium-Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) are proton pump inhibitors that prevent the production of acid in the stomach by the production of proton pumps. Nexium and Nexium-Proton Pump Inhibitor can be used together to treat GERD or persistent heartburn.
