Nexium is an effective medication used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other heartburn conditions.
Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). PPIs work by reducing acid production in the stomach, reducing the amount of stomach acid needed for normal digestion, and reducing the amount of acid produced by the esophagus.

The recommended starting dose for adults is 2.5 mg once daily for 3 to 4 weeks.

You should avoid taking this medication for at least 24 hours after you start receiving a heartburn medication. There may be an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening arrhythmias, such as heart failure, which may be a warning sign of heart disease.
If you have heart disease, liver disease, or kidney disease, you should avoid using Nexium, because the risks of side effects can increase when you take Nexium in larger amounts than recommended.
You should not use Nexium if you are allergic to esomeprazole or similar drugs, or if you are taking other heartburn medications including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and omeprazole-like drugs.
If you are a diabetic, you should avoid using Nexium because it can increase the risk of diabetes. You should also avoid using Nexium for treating heartburn that is caused by anemia, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, or a history of blood disorders.
